On Saturday, November 11th Elizabethtown’s 250th anniversary produced by the Elizabethtown-White Lake Chamber of Commerce will be held at the Cape Fear Farmers Market. During this joyful event, many key pieces of our amazing town will be showcased. With this event landing on Veterans Day, part of the opening ceremony will be dedicated to honor all of the men and women who served in the many branches of the armed forces. At the opening ceremony, you can also expect live music from East Bladen High School’s Marching Band. The celebration starts at 9 am and the opening ceremony will follow beginning at 10 am.

Here at BladenOnline, we were given the opportunity to speak with veterans Specialist Freddie McElveen – 6 years in the Army, Sergeant RJ Bailey – 14 years in the Marine Corps, and Specialist Kenneth Armstrong – 4 years in the Army to ask them a few questions about their experiences. Each joined the armed forces for different reasons, but all stated in different ways that they enjoyed their time. Sergeant Bailey stated that appreciation and “spreading the awareness of veterans and getting more people to understand” is one of the best ways that others can honor and support veterans.

While the 250th Anniversary of Elizabethtown highlights honoring veterans, the town of Elizabethtown also has lined up a day full of events like tours, games, and performances. From 10 am-2 pm, a walking tour of downtown Elizabethtown and the churches of Elizabethtown will be provided as a great start to this celebratory day. Starting at 11 am the Decatur Street Beat Band will fill the town with fantastic music for three hours. At noon many fun games will start. You can expect a corn shucking contest, whistling contest, boiled peanut eating contest that is sponsored by Peanut Patch and the Elizabethtown Rotary Club, a hamburger eating contest that is sponsored by Melvins’, and lastly a hollering contest for kids and adults. After all of the extreme fun, the day will cool down with music from Brent Underwood at 3:30 pm and Rivermist at 5 pm.

While celebrating it is important to remember that this joyful event could not be possible without the Elizabethtown-White Lake Chamber of Commerce and the many stage sponsors, patriot sponsors, and supporting sponsors.

This event will begin at 9 am and end at 8 pm. If you would like to attend, the base location for this event is 106 MLK Dr, Elizabethtown, NC.
