A former Bladen County resident will be featured on NPR’s radio show Prologue Book Club.

The episode will feature Lynn Welborn, formerly of Bladen County, who will discuss his book, Crazy Beach: Disc One. The interview will air on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 12 noon on WHQR 91.3 FM radio station.

“It’s very rewarding,” said Welborn of the reception the book has received.

He said when he resided in Bladen County he earned a NC Press Association award for his work in 1993 and that “jump started” his writing career.

Welborn shared with BladenOnline.com on Thursday that the book has also been nominated for a Pulitzer prize. The list of Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists will be announced on April 16, 2019.

“I’m so blessed,” said Wellborn.

Welborn, who now resides in Wilmington, resided in Bladen County from 1989 until 2013. Wellborn said he actually grew up in Carolina Beach but visited White Lake with his family in the 1960s and 1970s.

His book takes the reader on a journey of teenage adventure, lust and mischief all while exploring young life on an island. According to the book synopsis, “An instantly entertaining trek embedding into your heart forever the soundtrack of boyhood adventure, the girls of summer, and a journey to Woodstock through the eyes of an 11-year old stowaway.” According to the book’s back cover, the book’s characters learn about the secrets that are hidden within the Wave Theatre, conduct shenanigan’s on the boardwalk, scam tourists, and generally experience the angst of adolescent life.

Welborn’s book can be purchased online at Amazon.com or from Old Books on Front Street in Wilmington. For more information and updates regarding book signings, visit the Facebook page, Crazy Beach Novel.

Welborn said the sequel, Crazy Beach: Disc Two, is now in the editing process and he hopes to have it published in Spring 2019.
