ELIZABETHTOWN – Sophomore Maegan Burney and junior Alexus Mitchell combined for 34 points to lead East Bladen to a 59-14 Three Rivers Conference girls’ basketball victory over Red Springs Friday.

 

Burney who led all scorers with a career-high 19 points flipped in 3 baskets and 2 free throws in the 1st quarter. Mitchell who totaled 15 points buried a pair of 3-point shots and another basket. Junior Mya McDonald and senior Katie Evans added baskets as the Lady Eagles rolled to a 20-2 lead.

 

Evans and McDonald tossed in 2 baskets each in the 2nd period, and Burney dropped in a basket and a free throw. Mitchell sank 2 free throws and a basket, and sophomore AnnaGrey Heustess hit a free throw as the lead grew to 36-6.

 

Burney blistered the nets for 3 baskets and 2 free throws in the 3rd quarter. Sophmore Karli Priest and Mitchell nailed 3-point shots. McDonald and senior Lily Lin pumped in baskets, and Heustess cashed in 2 free throws to stretch the East lead to 56-12.

 

The final period was played with a continuous running clock. Priest popped in a basket, and freshman Zoe Smith connected on a free throw for East Bladen.

 

Mitchell collected 4 assists and 3 steals, while McDonald dished out 8 assists, tallied 8 points and was credited with 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Evans came up with 3 steals to go with her 6 points, and Heustess blocked 3 shots and had 3 steals.

 

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 2-1 in league play and 4-1 overall. East Bladen will host West Columbus Tuesday.
