ELIZABETHTOWN – East Bladen and South Columbus battled to a scoreless tie Tuesday night in the non-conference girls’ soccer opener for the Lady Eagles. South Columbus tied North Brunswick 0-0 Monday night.

“We did a great job of controlling the game,” said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor. “We are a fairly young team and we are still trying to find the best place for everyone on the pitch.”

Raynor continued, “The girls have shown a lot of growth over each half that we have played. We are progressing and gaining confidence. Started it out a little slow tonight but grew into the game.

It was a battle of 2 playoff teams of a year ago. East Bladen reached the 2nd round last year, while South was eliminated in the 3rd round by Class 2A state runner-up Clinton.

“We held South Columbus to only a few shots even fewer looks at goal,” stated Raynor. “We tallied 25 shots and several that forced their keeper to make tough saves.”

“Our attack got better as the night went on,” noted Raynor. “I was most impressed with our defending. Always nice to get a shutout and for your keeper not to have to make any difficult saves.” Junior Reese Hester recorded the shutout in goal for the Lady Eagles.

“I was impressed with our overall play as well as our fitness,” concluded Raynor. “Lots to be proud of from the girls tonight.”

East Bladen is slated to travel to Lumberton Friday night
