A staff report

This week, an inspiring event takes center stage as we prepare to celebrate the memory and dedication of Trooper Kevin Conner. Trooper Kevin Conner (Badge Number B-551) tragically lost his life during a traffic stop on October 17, 2018, while selflessly serving and protecting the community. In a touching tribute, every October, our community comes together, nearly a thousand strong, to commemorate his life and unwavering commitment through the annual Trooper Kevin Conner 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk.

Emily Dowless, one of the event organizers, recently shared a reminder on social media, emphasizing that it’s the final week to register for this meaningful event.

Mark your calendars for the 2023 Trooper Kevin Conner 5K and 1-Mile Run, set to take place on October 14. You can sign up or donate Runsignup.com to show your support for this noble cause. By sponsoring or participating in this event, you play a vital role in shaping a brighter future for students in the counties mentioned and across North Carolina. The organizers deeply value the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families, and their dedication ensures that the memory of Trooper Kevin Conner, a true hero, continues to shine.

The funds raised during the race will be channeled into the Trooper Kevin Conner Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund. This initiative awards three $5,000 scholarships annually: one to a student from Bladen County, another from Columbus County, and the third through the Blue Line Scholarship, which is open to direct family members of law enforcement officers across the entire state of North Carolina. As the foundation grows, there are ambitious plans to expand both the number of scholarships and the amounts awarded.

Last year, the event was an enormous success, with over 900 dedicated runners participating. It marked a historic milestone as the largest organized race ever held in Columbus County.
