A staff report

Bladen County has a proud history of honoring its veterans, and this year, the Bladen County VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Chapter is gearing up for a remarkable event that aims to pay tribute to our Vietnam War Era Veterans and surviving spouses of deceased Vietnam-era Veterans. According to Leon Grimes, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist, this commemoration event promises to be a meaningful occasion for all involved, and the public is invited to join in recognizing and registering these heroes who served during a pivotal time in our nation’s history.

Event Details:

  • Date: Friday, March 29, 2024
  • Time: 10:00 AM
  • Location: To be confirmed (likely on the Bladen Community College campus)

During this special ceremony, each Vietnam-era Veteran or surviving spouse of Vietnam-era Veterans will receive a Vietnam War Veterans Commemorative Lapel Pin. It’s important to note that eligibility for this honor does not require deployment to Vietnam. Simply serving in any branch of the US Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era qualifies someone for this recognition.

Grimes explains, “We are extending an open invitation to Veterans, Family Members of Veterans, and surviving spouses of deceased Vietnam-era Veterans to register their loved ones for this event.” Registration is a simple process, and you have two options:

Option 1: Complete the registration form attached to this article and submit it. Click HERE to see the form.

Option 2: Call Bladen County VFW Post Commander, Mr. Dana Gill, at (910) 364-5128, and answer a few straightforward questions to register.

To make the event even more special, we are working to secure dignitaries and speakers who will share their insights and gratitude during the ceremony. This is a community effort to express our collective appreciation for the sacrifices made during the Vietnam War era.

Grimes stated, “We encourage everyone in Bladen County and the surrounding areas to spread the word and register Vietnam-era Veterans and surviving spouses of deceased Vietnam-era Veterans for this significant event. Let us come together as a community to express our gratitude and honor the service and sacrifices of our Vietnam War era heroes.”
