The Bladen County Shrine Club’s annual fall Fish Fry has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 14. There will be two locations once again this year — the Fresh Food IGA in Bladenboro and the Food Lion parking lot in Elizabethtown. The tourist event started on Saturday, September 29th, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The tour ended on Saturday, October 6th, with cyclists leaving Elizabethtown and heading to Oak Island. As the cyclists rolled into Elizabethtown on Friday, October 5th, they were greeted by Town of Elizabethtown Mayor Sylvia Campbell, the Chamber of Commerce, business owners and citizens. Contributed Amateur radio enthusiasts from Bladen County came together this past weekend to demonstrate their technical expertise, and the emergency response capabilities of amateur, or ‘Ham’, radio. Members of the Bladen County Amateur Radio Society, known as W4BLA, set up a make-shift operations site in the field adjacent to the Farmer’s Market in downtown Elizabethtown, and, for a 24-hour period known as ‘Field Day’, they operated an around-the-clock effort to contact as many radio amateurs around the world as possible. The Ammon Blueberry Festival has ended its run after it was decided to not move forward with festival plans for this year, according to Marguerite Coble, one of the event’s many organizers. The reason given for no festival this year is the fact that so many of those who volunteer to help are not able to assist the committee this year. “With limited staff, we just decided this year it was best not to have it,” said Coble. On Saturday, there will be a Grilled Chicken Plate fundraiser at the Camp Clearwater Arcade in White Lake. Each plate of food will cost $7 and will begin at 11 a.m. The fundraiser is for Ron Black, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and diagnosed again with colon cancer in February. The Cooperative Council of North Carolina will conduct a Cooperative Leadership Camp (CLC) from June 18th through June 22nd, 2018, at the FFA Center at White Lake. CLC is a five day four night summer camp that puts teens in the positions of Worker Owners of a T-shirt cooperative. Bladen County Relay for Life will take place from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. today (Friday, May 4) at the Elizabethtown Middle School track. There are 22 teams entered in the event. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is to raise $78,000 to help with cancer research. As of 11 a.m. Friday, they had raised $48,610 of that goal.
