A staff report

As summer approaches, bringing longer days and the close of another school year, ensuring that our children continue to receive nutritious meals even when school is out is essential. In response to this need, the USDA has launched a new, permanent food assistance program called SUN Bucks, which is set to launch, promising a helping hand to families across the community.

Starting this summer, SUN Bucks aims to support eligible families by providing additional resources to buy groceries. Through the program, each qualified child will receive $120 in food-purchasing benefits. These benefits will be accessible via a card similar to a debit card, making the process of buying food as straightforward and dignified as any typical grocery shopping experience.

These SUN Bucks cards can be used at a broad range of retailers that accept EBT payments, encompassing most major grocery store chains. This flexibility ensures that families have the freedom to choose where to shop and what food items to purchase, providing them with autonomy over their dietary choices.

Families interested in taking advantage of the SUN Bucks program are encouraged to visit the official webpage at www.ncdhhs.gov/sunbucks for detailed information. The website is designed to be user-friendly and is a central hub for all inquiries and resources related to the SUN Bucks program.

An essential notice to all families is that some will receive these benefits automatically, delivered to the mailing address currently on file in their child’s school records. However, to ensure that no child misses out on this valuable assistance, it is crucial for families to update their mailing address if necessary. The deadline for these updates is March 28th, and they can be made by reaching out to the data manager at your child’s school.

As the community prepares to welcome this initiative, the SUN Bucks program stands as a beacon of support, promising a little more sunshine for the families it will serve. It is not just a program but a commitment to the health and well-being of our children, a testament to the belief that no child should go hungry and that every child deserves the nutrients to grow, learn, and thrive during the summer months and beyond.
