Jones Lake State Park has released its October program itinerary. Learn about bears, the mysteries of the Carolina Bays, how to use a compass and snakes.

The park is located at 4117 NC 242 North, Elizabethtown. Events are free and open to the public. For information about the programs, call 910-588-4550.

Oct. 7, 2 p.m.: All About Bears

Join a park ranger for a discussion on Jones Lake’s largest mammal … the black bear. Learn about the biology and habits of the king of the forest. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park Visitor Center at 2 p.m.

Oct. 14, 10 a.m.: Carolina Bay Hike

Join a park ranger and learn about the geological mysteries of the Carolina Bays. Formation theories and the natural communities associated with Carolina Bays will be discussed. Participants should meet at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m.

Oct. 22, 10 a.m.: Compass Course

Join a ranger for an introduction to compass use. The program will go over the features of a compass and how to use them. Participants will also learn how to navigate a map with a compass. The program will consist of a navigation course and compass to map exercise. Compasses will be provided to participants. Children ages 10 and under will need an adult to accompany them through the navigation and map exercises. Participants should meet at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m.

Oct. 28, 2 p.m.: Snakes

Ever wonder what snakes’ species are at home in eastern North Carolina? Which ones are venomous? Join a park ranger at the Visitor Center in exploring the various snakes in this area and the other unique species found throughout our great state. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park Visitor Center at 2 p.m.
