BLADENBORO – Purnell Swett turned 3 double plays and held off a late West Bladen rally to claim a 4-3 Junior American Legion baseball victory Thursday night.
With Swett leading 4-1, Garrett Dunham spanked a 1-out single to right field in the West 6th inning. Dunham stole 2nd base and raced home when Cade Allen yanked a single to left. Allen advanced on a wild pitch and scored as Jordan Hester reached base on an error. Will Durden walked, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning.
West Bladen scored their other run in the 1st inning. Dunham lined a single to left and advanced on an infield out. Allen scorched a single through the left side that scored Dunham.
Gavin James singled and scored the tying run for Swett on Everitt Pinto’s single to left in the 2nd inning. Sam Brewington slammed an RBI double in the 4th inning then scored on a fielder’s choice for a 3-1 lead.
The Rams bunched 3 singles to score an insurance run in the 5th inning.
Dunham finished 2-for-2 at the plate and scored 2 runs to lead the Knight hitters. Allen batted 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Allister Russ hammered a double, and Hester cracked a single.
Allen started on the mound for West and pitched 2 innings, allowing an unearned run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 2. Tyler Lewis pitched 5 innings in relief and allowed 3 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits while striking out 8.
Jackson Jacobs and Ethan both batted 2-for-3 to lead the Ram hitters. James pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2. C. Jacobs struck out 1 and walked 1 in a scoreless 7th inning for the Rams.
West Bladen is now 3-4 on the season.
