CERRO GORDO — West Columbus built a 31-18 lead then held off a furious 19-7 closing surge by East Bladen to escape with a 38-37 Waccamaw Conference jayvee boys’ basketball victory Tuesday.
The jayvee Eagles, now 6-4 in league play and 8-8 overall, will host Heide Trask Friday.
Sophomore Dashawn Campbell keyed the Eagles closing run with 2 baskets and a free throw. Teammate Braylon Cromartie connected on 4 of 6 free throws in the period, and Jaquan McCrea sank 2 free throws and a basket. Torrean Cogdell pumped in 2 baskets, and Landyn Scott tossed in a basket. Two baskets by Jaecon helped keep West on top.
Campbell led all scorers with 17 points for the Eagles. Cogdell finished with 7 points, and Cromartie and McCrea threw in 4 points each.
Lamarriez B. topped the Viking scoring with 13 points, and Jaecon followed with 10 points. Kayvon added 8.
Campbell worked the paint for 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the 1st half for East. Cogdell popped in a basket and a free throw, and Ihon Thomas buried a 3-point shot to keep the Eagles within 20-12 at halftime.
Campbell banged in a trio of baskets in the 3rd quarter for East Bladen.
