ELIZABETHTOWN – Junior Greyson Heustess fired in 2 goals to lead East Bladen to a 4-1 non-conference men’s soccer victory over Midway Wednesday night.

Heustess knocked in a rebound off of a corner kick from 4 yards out in the 25th minute for the first goal of the game.

In the 27th minute Heustess sent a long pass to midfield to senior Brooks McGill. As McGill raced toward the goal, the Midway keeper ran out towards McGill who chipped a shot over his head and into the goal from 14 yards out for a 2-0 Eagle lead.

With 4 minutes left in the half, junior B. J. Monroe headed a pass to freshman Garrett Melvin who banged in the shot from 15 yards out for his first varsity goal.

A foul in the box whistled on the Eagles led to a penalty kick that produced the Midway goal and trimmed the East lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute.

Nine minutes later Heustess converted a Jake Evans corner kick into his second goal finding the back of the net from 13 yards out.

Junior goalkeeper Spencer Scott was credited with 6 saves for the Eagles – 3 in each half. “Spencer made a couple of really big saves for us,” said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. “He didn’t have to make many, but they came at key moments.”

“We came out and played really well early,” continued Raynor. “We had several more really good chances to score in the first half. Midway got us out of our game in the second half with their style of play and that was disappointing.

“Overall there were a lot more positives to take from the match,” concluded Coach Raynor. “The ball moved well and we played a high level of soccer that we are capable of playing. If we can put that together for 80 minutes we will be a tough match anytime we suit up.”

The Eagles remain unbeaten at 3-0 and will host Scotland next Thursday.
