ELIZABETHTOWN — Levi Velasco-Garcia keyed an 11-4 Tar Heel 3rd quarter run that propelled the Panthers to a 38-30 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over Elizabethtown Tuesday night.

Coach Ken Cross’ Panthers improved to 9-1 on the season and will visit Bladenboro Wednesday night. Elizabethtown, now 3-7, will travel to Clarkton School of Discovery Wednesday night.

Tar Heel held a slim 16-15 halftime lead. Velasco-Garcia began the 3rd period by firing in a 3-point bomb and 2 more baskets. Demarious Guions and Carnell Lewis dropped in a basket each as the Panther lead grew to 27-19. Jayden Lewis pumped in 2 baskets for Elizabethtown in the quarter.

Carnell Lewis tossed in 2 baskets and a free throw in the final quarter to keep Tar Heel on top. C. J. McKiver buried a 3-point shot, Guions popped in a basket, and Velasco-Garcia tacked on a free throw.

Julian McLaney bombed in a pair of 3-point shots in the 4th period for the Cougars, and Fox Sutton nailed a 3-point shot and another basket. Jayden Lewis added a free throw.

Velasco-Garcia headed the Tar Heel scoring list with 11 points. Carnell Lewis and Guions were right behind him with 10 points each. McKiver followed with 5 points.

Sutton and Jayden Lewis shared scoring honors for Elizabethtown with 8 points each. McLaney finished with 6 points, and Prince McKoy chipped in with 5 points.

McKoy and Brandon McKinley pumped in early baskets for the Cougars, but Velasco-Garcia drilled in a 3-pointer, Jarvis McMillan hurled in a basket and Carnell Lewis converted a free throw for a 6-4 Tar Heel lead.

Guions sank 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the 2nd period, and McKiver and Carnell Lewis powered in a basket each for the Panthers. Sutton and McKoy knocked down 3-point shots for the Cougars. Jayden Lewis threw in a basket and a free throw, and Tykee Hill muscled in a basket to whittle the Panther lead to one.
