TAR HEEL – Tyleah Freeman and Nevaeh Brown fired in 10 points each to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 28-9 non-conference girls basketball victory over Tar Heel Thursday. Teammate Montiera Richardson tossed in 7 points.
Freeman turned an assist from Ellie Kinlaw into a lay-up to start the game then banked in a pair of runners. Richardson put back a rebound, and Brown turned a feed from Freeman into a lay-up then popped in a 10-footer for a 12-2 Lady Blue Devil lead. Janavia Adams banked in a 14-footer for the Tar Heel basket.
Richardson sank 2 free throws to begin the 2nd period then banked in a 3-point shot to beat the halftime buzzer and push the Clarkton lead to 19-6. Freeman stole the ball and raced for a lay-up for CSD. Tar Heel’s ZaAsia Lewis scored on a follow shot then banked in an 8-footer off of an Adams assist.
Abigail Dew pumped in a 12-footer and hit a free throw for the Lady Panther points in the 3rd period. Freeman buried a 3-point shot for the winners, and Brown muscled in a pair of follow shots as the lead grew to 25-9.
Another Kinlaw assist resulted in a Brown lay-up, and Imani Bowens made a free throw in the 4th quarter for the Lady Blue Devils. Brown grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 steals for Clarkton. Freeman snatched 5 rebounds and had 5 steals. Richardson finished with 3 steals, Kinlaw dished out 2 assists and snared 3 rebounds. Aniya Willis pulled down 4 rebounds.
Lewis led Tar Heel with 4 points and 3 rebounds. Dew tallied 3 points and had 4 steals. Adams followed with 2 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Amiracle Robinson grabbed 3 rebounds.
Clarkton will play Elizabethtown at 5:15 Tuesday in the Bladen County Tournament at Elizabethtown. Tar Heel will battle Bladenboro in Tuesday’s tournament opener at 4 p.m.
