Middle School Girls Basketball
Clarkton School of Discovery 39, Tar Heel 6
Clarkton School of Discovery raced to leads of 17-0, 26-2 and 36-3 en route to a 39-6 Bladen Five Middle School Conference girls basketball victory Tuesday over visiting Tar Heel.
Khadijah Jones threw in 8 of her game-high 12 points in the first period, making 3 baskets and 2 free throws. Teammates Sara Gargala, Katie Evans, Lauren Bowen and Lila McDuffie tossed in a basket each, and Evans also sank a free throw.
Bowen fired in a basket and a free throw in the second period, and Jones, Gargala and center Lorna Mendell added a basket each as the lead grew to 26-2.
Brigit Zuniga pumped in a basket for Tar Heel in the second quarter.
Abbie Cross bombed in a 3-point shot in the third period for the Lady Blue Devils, and Izzy Smith popped in a basket and a free throw in the quarter. Jones and Evans scored a basket each for Clarkton in the period.
Melissa Valades-Suarez made a free throw in the third quarter, and Karen Santos-Osornio canned a free throw in the final period. Zuniga connected for her second basket of the game in the fourth quarter and led the Lady Panther scoring with 4 points.
McDuffie’s basket and a Mendell free throw closed out the Clarkton scoring in the fourth quarter. Bowen and Evans followed Jones in the Lady Blue Devil scoring column with 5 points each, and Gargala and McDuffie totaled 4 points each.
Clarkton’s victory coupled with Bladenboro’s loss at Elizabethtown puts the Lady Blue Devils alone in first place in the Bladen Five with a 4-1 record. Clarkton will travel to Elizabethtown Thursday at 4 p.m. to close out their regular season schedule.
