Center Javant McDowell pumped in 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half as Clarkton School of Discovery held on for a 46-42 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over visiting Tar Heel Tuesday night.

Five different Blue Devils scored as Clarkton built a 12-8 first period lead. Guard Garrett Melvin tossed in 2 baskets, and McDowell, Lawson Hester, Tashuan Berkley and Xavier McKoy added one basket each in the quarter.

Tyre Boykin threw in a basket and a free throw for Tar Heel in the first quarter. Teammates Shemaiah Leak and Kendall Johnson scored a basket each, and Christopher George made a free throw.

Berkley banged in a pair of baskets in the second quarter, and Hester and Jake Evans contributed a basket each. McKoy hit a free throw to push the Blue Devil halftime lead to 21-17.

Leak nailed a 3-point shot and another basket in the second quarter for the Panthers, and Johnson and Boykin kept Tar Heel close with a basket each.

McDowell took charge inside with 4 third quarter baskets for the Blue Devils. Evans sank 2 free throws, McKoy made one and Berkley popped in another basket as the CSD lead grew to 34-28.

Johnson scored 2 baskets for Tar Heel in the third quarter, and Boykin, Leak and Jadicus Register added one basket each. Boykin also tacked on a free throw.

Register bombed in a pair of 3-point shots for the Panthers in the final quarter. Leak blistered the nets with a trio of baskets, and George scored a basket as Tar Heel pulled to within 4 points.

McDowell sank 3 free throws and a basket in the final period for Clarkton. Berkley and Hester dropped in a basket each, Melvin made 2 free throws, and Berkley hit one as the Blue Devils pulled out the victory.

Berkley finished with 11 points, and Melvin and Hester followed with 6 points each. Evans and McKoy tallied 4 points each.

Leak topped the Tar Heel scoring with 15 points. Boykin, Register and Johnson followed with 8 points each.

Clarkton improved to 6-1 and remained tied for first place in the Bladen Five with Elizabethtown. The two teams play at Elizabethtown Thursday night.
