CERRO GORDO – A 10-run 3rd inning rally overcame a 5-3 Elizabethtown lead and propelled West Columbus to a 13-8 Waccamaw Middle School Conference softball victory over Elizabethtown Tuesday.

Elizabethtown, now 0-5, will host Whiteville Central Wednesday in a make-up game. West Columbus evened their record at 2-2.

Racquel Whittington, Avianna Whittington, Calleigh Smith, Sana’a Singletary, Gabbi West and Ny’Ashia Lyles all drew walks for the Lady Cougars in the 1st inning. Racquel Whittington, Avianna Whittington and Smith all scored to put Elizabethtown up 3-0.

West Columbus pitcher Demya Powell blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Warriors tied the game 3-3.

Zariyah Riddy led off the Elizabethtown 3rd inning with a single, and West, Lyles and Avianna Whittington drew walks. Racquel Whittington reached base on a passed 3rd strike. Riddy and West scored to put the Lady Cougars on top 5-3.

Payton belted a pair of singles, and Powell ripped a single in the West 3rd inning. Seven walks and an error contributed to the 10-run rally that produced a 13-5 lead.

Singletary hammered a triple, and Riddy, West, Lyles and Racquel Whittington drew walks in the Elizabethtown 4th inning. Singletary and Riddy scored to trim the lead to 13-7. Riddy walloped a home run in the Lady Cougar 5th inning to trim the final margin to 13-8.

Riddy batted 2-for-3 with the home run and 3 runs scored to lead the Lady Cougars. Singletary tripled and scored a run. Racquel Whittington, Avianna Whittington, Smith and West scored 1 run each. Elizabethtown capitalized on 15 walks in the game.

Powell slugged the 2-run homer and batted 2-for-4 to lead the West hitters. Payton finished 2-for-2 at the plate, and Maddie Bullard and Brissa Matheson added 1 hit each.

“The girls played well today,” said Elizabethtown Coach Chris Davisson. “I was very proud of their effort. They played hard today for each other.”
