BLADENBORO – Senior Yomaris Vasquez and sophomore Angel Purcell slugged home runs Tuesday night to lead St. Pauls’ to a 13-3 Southeastern Athletic Conference softball victory over West Bladen.
The Lady Knights, now 2-3 in SAC play and 2-6 overall, will travel to St. Pauls’ Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs are unbeaten (4-0) in the league and 11-4 overall.
Vasquez pounded her 2-run homer to left field in the 1st inning to give St. Pauls’ an early lead.
Juniors Holland Davis and Marlie Walters reached base on errors in the West Bladen half of the 1st. Davis was retired at the plate on senior Gracie Faircloth’s fielder’s choice, but sophomore Kali Allen knocked in Walters and Faircloth with a double to left field. Sophomore Natalee Sykes drove in Allen with a single to center field to put West up 3-2.
Ke’Mya Baldwin doubled and scored on Hailey Ray’s single to tie the game 3-3 in the 2nd inning. Purcell ignited the Lady Bulldogs’ 6-run 3rd inning with a home run to center field. Singles by Vasquez, Madison Locklear, Baldwin and Nevaeh Porter plus 2 walks and a hit batter produced the runs.
Vasquez pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 1 for St. Pauls’.
Faircloth started in the circle and pitched 2.1 innings for West allowing 7 runs – 5 earned – on 8 hits while striking out 3. Junior Marlene Crabtree worked 3.2 innings of relief allowing 6 runs – 5 earned – on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4.
Allen’s 2-run double led the Lady Knight hitters. Sykes cracked the run-scoring single, and junior Kallie Bass added a single. Walters, Faircloth and Allen scored 1 run each.
Baldwin batted 2-for-3 with a double, a run batted in and 4 runs scored for St. Pauls. Porter finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Vasquez was 2-for-4 with 2-run homer. Madison Locklear batted 2-for-4 and scored twice, and Ray was 2-for-5 with a double and 1 RBI. Purcell walloped the home run and had 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
