PEMBROKE – West Bladen grad Morgan Sweeney smacked 2 hits and scored 2 runs Thursday as her Newberry Lady Wolves swept UNC-Pembroke Thursday in a non-conference double-header by scores of 2-0 and 10-4.

Another West Bladen grad, Abbey Walters, pitched the first game for the Lady Braves and allowed only two runs – one earned – on 7 hits. The senior righthander struck out a season-high seven batters.

Newberry pushed across an unearned run in the first inning. In the fifth inning, Sweeney (pictured) bounced an infield hit over the mound, stole second base and scored on Hailey Drawe’s single to push the Lady Wolves lead to 2-0.

Walters yanked a double into the leftfield corner in the UNC-Pembroke seventh inning and finished 1-3 at the plate.

In the nightcap the Lady Wolves broke the game open with a 5-run third-inning that resulted in a 7-0 Newberry lead. Sweeney laced a single to leftfield to lead off the third, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Drawe’s double to left-centerfield.

Newberry improved to 15-6 with the 2 wins, while UNC-Pembroke dropped to 17-8. Newberry will host UVa-Wise in a 1 p.m. Saturday double-header. UNC-Pembroke will travel to Augusta, GA Saturday for a 1 p.m. double-header.
