NCDOT has awarded contracts for three major construction projects in Bladen County that totals nearly $40 million.
NC DOTA $14.8 million contract to construct three bridges over the Cape Fear River on NC 11 was awarded to HRI Bridge Co. of Blacksburg, SC in late 2012.  Construction continues with a completion date over a year away, on April 1, 2016.
The three NC 11 bridges were constructed in 1952 and are considered structurally deficient. In a new release at the time of the awarding of the contract, NCDOT indicated the bridges are still safe, however they require extensive maintenance and repair and needed to be replaced.
Another bridge is being constructed over the Cape Fear River near Tar Heel.  The completion date on that project is expected to be near the end of 2015 with a price tag of $11.8 million..
In January, 2015 another NCDOT road project was let for $13.2 million.  That project is just getting underway and involves an upgrade at the US 701 & NC 87 bypass near Elizabethtown that will go from an intersection with a stoplight to an interchange.  The contract was awarded to Barnhill Construction Company of Rocky Mount with a completion date of September 2017.
