Spread the love

By Cara Beth Lewis

As one year rolls to an end, many people begin thinking about the coming year – how to be better, do better, look better, feel better, or whatever the “better” may be. For many, this is implemented in the form of New Year’s Resolutions.

Interestingly enough, more than half of the resolutions that are made in honor of the new year fail. Some last a few days, some last a week, some last maybe a few months, and few last all year long. Let’s face it, creating new and better habits is hard, and sticking to them is even harder. The question is, how can you successfully maintain your resolution all through the year?

Here are some tips to creating a resolution that will last:

  1. Create a resolution that is realistic. Consider your schedule and obligations.
  2. Make it meaningful. If it is important to you, you are more likely to stick to it.
  3. Think about how maintaining the new habit will affect your life. How will it benefit you?
  4. Make a plan. Think about how you can make it a part of your daily routine in a way that is convenient for you.
  5. Don’t give up just because you slip up. If you fall off the wagon, just jump back on.

According to History.com, “The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year—though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted.”

Some common resolutions include:

  1. Exercise more
  2. Lose weight
  3. Get organized
  4. Learn a new skill or hobby
  5. Live life to the fullest
  6. Save more money / spend less money
  7. Quit smoking
  8. Spend more time with family and friends
  9. Travel more
  10. Read more

Whatever your resolution is, we wish you luck in defying the odds and maintaining your goal all year long. Happy New Year!
