A staff report

Sayaun Dent’s journey at Sandhills Community College was nothing short of extraordinary. From his early days as a starting member of the Flyers to the pinnacle of success in the 2019-20 season, Dent’s impact was felt both on and off the basketball court.

In the 2018-19 season, Dent played a pivotal role in the Flyers’ National Tournament qualifying team. However, it was the following season that truly showcased his talents. Averaging 17.9 points and 9 rebounds per game, Dent’s remarkable performance led the Flyers to an 84-and-2 record and clinched the NJCAA DIII National Championship in 2020.

His achievements were numerous, from being named All-Region 10 to earning the title of NJCAA and NABC Division III Basketball Player of the Year. Coach Mike Apple praised Dent’s unwavering focus and described him as a “player’s player.” Sayaun graduated from Sandhills. However, tragically, Dent’s promising future was cut short in an automobile accident while pursuing a medical degree at UNC Pembroke.

Sayaun Dent’s impact extended beyond the court, leading the Flyers to two NJCAA Region X championships and excelling in key statistical categories. As a guard with a major in Arts, Dent embodied excellence both academically and athletically.

Sayaun was inducted in the 2024 Sandhills Athletic Hall of Fame, yesterday, January 20, 2024. In a touching moment, Joshua Ward presented Dr. Crystal Rogers, Sayaun’s mother, with honors on behalf of her son. Dr. Rogers, President, and Founder of the Sayaun Dent Memorial Foundation, announced a Sponsorship and Donation campaign to continue Dent’s legacy. The campaign, opening on January 23, 2024, aims to support academic and athletic excellence, echoing Sayaun Dent’s commitment to both realms.

The Sayaun Dent Memorial Foundation, Inc. stands as a testament to Dent’s exemplary life, ensuring that his impact endures through contributions to academics and athletics. As the campaign window opens, it invites individuals to join in commemorating Sayaun Dent’s legacy and making a meaningful impact in his honor.
