1914—World War I: Battle of Cer begins.

1920—Ray Chapman, of Indians is hit in head by Yanks’ Carl Mays pitch: he dies next day, only major league fatality.

1934—US ends occupation of Haiti (been there since 1915)

1947—Ralph Kiner becomes 1st Pittsburgh Pirate to hit 3 consecutive HRs.

1954—Jack Paar replaces Walter Cronkite as host of “The Morning Show” on CBS-TV.

1977—Elvis Presley dies of a heart attack at the age of 42 in Memphis, TN.

1988—IBM introduces software for artificial intelligence.

1991—President Bush declares recession is near an end.

2003—US Representative from South Dakota Bill Janklow hits and kills a motorcyclist with his car at a rural intersection near Trent, South Dakota; he will eventually be convicted of manslaughter and will resign from Congress.

2012—Julian Assange, Wikileaks founder, is granted political asylum by Ecuador.
