Thoughts While Shaving

North Carolina High School football teams decided state-wide championships in all categories yesterday and last night, despite cold weather, including snow and rain at time in many games.

Among the last to be decided: Wallace Rose Hill 35 – Reidsville 28 in overtime for 2A title.

For years, there has been concern about jobs for local residents, now the concern is a lack of labor, OK, a lack of labor who are looking for work.  Most recent unemployment numbers indicate the statewide rate is 4.1%, 5.7% in Bladen County.  There are 14,542 in the local labor force, with 828 listed as unemployed.  More jobs are on the way, including nearly 300 at Smithfield Foods over coming months.

EDC is a never ending effort in Bladen.  Think back a few years and list companies that were once thriving local businesses, now out of business.  I listed some recently.  Remember Sportee in Clarkton, Grief Bros. Barrel Company in Bladenboro, the Squires family rocking chair manufacturing company near Kelly, Ward Bros. Lumber Co. in E-town?  Was told recently approximately 40 such businesses were no longer in business.  Local cut ‘n sew operations are a thing of the past.  And, none of those previously here moved to Mexico.  My guess…primarily new technology made them obsolete.  Thank goodness for local Bladen County EDC efforts.
