During the noon work session on Monday, the Elizabethtown Town Council discussed a sign proposal. The sign in question is utilized when the town attempts to sell property using sealed bids.

Town Councilman Dicky Glenn questioned the size of the sign being utilized. Town staff obtained a quote in the amount of $453.69 for a 36-inch by 48-inch two-sided sign to advertise the property for sale on West Broad Street.

Town Manager Eddie Madden explained the town was utilizing the sign in question in August to advertise a lot on West Broad Street which was offered for sale through the sealed bid process. The sign in question contained the information required by law for the advertisement.

Councilman Glenn stated that the sign was difficult to read.  “What I’m proposing is a bigger, larger sign,” said Glenn.

As the discussion continued, Madden reminded the board they had rejected the bids which had been received on the lot. The board now needs to decide how they wish to proceed on the matter as well as determining what size sign they want to use to advertise the lot, according to Madden.

Councilman Howell Clark suggested the board consider re-advertising the lot and the board giving Madden the authority to negotiate the sale of the property. He noted if the board changes the process for selling the lot, then the size of the sign would not be an issue.

It was decided the board will vote on the matter during Monday evening’s session at 7 p.m.

In other business, the board received the audit report from Bryon Scott of Thompson, Price, Scott, Adams & Company.

“Everything is compliant,” said Scott of the audit.

He said the fund balance had increased though it is still below the state average. Scott also said the tax collection rate for the town is 96.92 percent down slightly from 97.43 percent last year. The state average tax collection rate is 98.45 percent.

Scott noted town staff are working with the town attorney on collecting past due tax accounts which should help the tax collection rate.

The board also approved resolutions for Hire a Vet Week and Optimist Club Youth Appreciation Week.
