A 35-year-old barber and single father, Michael Jason Bullock, has been charged with murder and is being held in the Bladen County Detention Center. According to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was Mitchell Ray Meggs, a 66-year-old white male formerly from South Carolina. The Sheriff’s Office said both Bullock and the deceased man lived at the same residence in Dublin.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, Bladen County’s 911 center received a call at approximately 7:52 p.m. of a domestic violence situation on Albert Street in Dublin. A short time later, another call was received saying that a man may be dying at the residence on Albert Street, according to a news release.

In a voice recording to 911, Bullock is heard telling the operator, “I was there with my kid, and I had someone staying there, and he was there talking about hurting my youngin’ and stuff, and oh no, that ain’t going to happen.” Bullock reported to the operator that he was at the Dollar General in Dublin.

According to the Sheriff’s report, deputies arrived at the residence and saw blood spatter on a bedroom window. The deputies entered the home through an unsecured door and found a man in a bedroom who was deceased.

The Sheriff’s Office said that Bullock was detained a short time later at the Dollar General store in Dublin.

Bullock, was arrested and is in the Bladen County Detention Center without bond. He was appointed a local attorney, Cynthia Singletary, as “provisional counsel” and referred to Indigent Defense Services by Judge Scott Ussery for an appointment of a permanent attorney.

BladenOnline staff left a message by phone with the Office of Indigent Defense Services (“IDS”). At this time, IDS has not replied to BladenOnline’s queries, and no further information is available.

The investigation is ongoing. The cause of the death of Meggs is still unknown. According to the Sheriff’s Office, an autopsy of the victim is being conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh. No further information is available at this time.
