Overview—A weak upper level disturbance will move across the Carolinas overnight Tuesday increasing the chance of some light rain.  A wedge of cold air will remain a the surface across extreme western portions of our forecast area–initially west of I-95 but spreading to the southeast during the morning, that may result in some freezing drizzle/rain for several hours during the morning hours.

Impacts—Any freezing precipitation will create hazardous traveling conditions across the area.  All roadways, especially those elevated bridges and road surfaces, are vulnerable to icing conditions.  Areas of hazardous travel can be expected in areas where freezing precipitation falls.  This has the potential to create widespread hazardous driving conditions and should be monitored closely.  The impacts will be especially high during the morning commute.

Timing—Light rain will begin to fall across the region starting Tuesday but cold air will start to arrive well after midnight and it is expected to be cold enough by around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning to change over to freezing drizzle or rain.  The process will first occur across the northwest areas and gradually spread to the southeast during the morning. Temperatures are expected to fall to between 30-32 degrees.

Model Trends—The past few model runs are trending colder …bringing in a deeper layer of colder air and pushing further to the southeast.  The confidence level is low as of now for this developing but has increased during the past 12 hours and as such warrants close monitoring for the potential of winter weather watches or advisories being posted.
