Three Things to KnowThree things to know for Wednesday, July 13

1. G.R. Smith set a track qualifying record of 14.911 seconds Saturday night on the 4/10th-mile Dublin Motor Speedway. If the figuring is correct, that computes to 96.57 mph. That’s really motoring around a short dirt track. The Super Late Models always looked fast. Now you know how fast the fastest has gone.

2. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for leaving a one-year-old beagle mix dog tied to a bridge by her leash and a combination of wires, an extension cord, duct tape, and RCA connectors near the intersection of Slippery Log and Thompson Town roads in Columbus. Anyone with information can call Columbus County Animal Control at 910-641-3945.

3. In the wake of a malware data breach that affected more than 1,000 Wendy’s fast food restaurants nationwide, consumers should take action to avoid identity theft, Attorney General Roy Cooper said Monday. Among the North Carolina locations comprised are those in Clinton, Fayetteville, Hope Mills and Lumberton. Wendy’s announced last week that a malware variant may have exposed customers’ payment card data, cardholder names, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, cardholder verification values and service codes.

And now you know.
