The telecommunicators that answer the calls at the 911 Call Center in Elizabethtown are dedicated to their jobs. On Wednesday, they received recognition during a departmental meeting of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

“There is a certification that our 911 Call Center goes through called Emergency Medical Dispatch,” said Bladen County Chief Deputy Larry Guyton.

He explained the telecommunicators must take a course and the communications center is graded based on a set of criteria in order to keep the EMD certification.

“One of the requirements is that 90 percent of the called come in to dispatch have to be answered within 10 seconds. Our ladies and guys, their average was 96.30 percent answering of phone calls within 10 seconds,” said Guyton.

He said that when you look at the call center’s numbers, you soon realize why this is such a good feat.

Guyton said during the period from July 2014 to July 2015, which is the period of time used for the measurement, the Bladen County 911 Call Center received 85,800 telephone calls. Guyton said of those calls, 46,249 required fire, rescue or law enforcement be dispatched.

“That breaks down to about 235 calls per day. We had our annual departmental meeting on Wednesday and we wanted to recognize our 911 folks. We wanted to give them recognition for that,” said Guyton.
