 East Bladen High SchoolFAYETTEVILLE – An 11-1 Cape Fear spurt early in the final period propelled the Colts to a 76-68 non-conference boys basketball victory over East Bladen Wednesday night.
 
Eagle senior Eian Hines drove for a lay-up, and sophomore Adonis Avery sank a free throw to put East ahead 45-43 with 1:19left in the third period.
 
Guard Kevin McLaughlin and senior Donyea McLucas threw in 3-point baskets in the final 31 seconds of the quarter to vault the Colts in front 49-45 at the break.
 
East Bladen’s Demetrius Wooten banked in a floater to begin the final period and narrow the margin to 49-47, but center Myron Williams and McLauglin sandwiched 2 free throws each for the Colts around an Xavier Wooten free throw.
 
Chris George banked in a 3-pointer, Williams tapped in a rebound and McLaughlin turned a steal into a lay-up for a 60-48 Cape Fear lead.
 
Eian Hines scooped in a lay-up, and Demetrius Wooten flipped in a short jumper, but McLucas hit from the baseline and put back a rebound, and Williams dropped in a lay-up as the Colt lead grew to 68-52 with 1:57 remaining.
 
Avery drove for a lay-up and a 3-point play, and Xavier Wooten powered in a lay-up to close the gap to 68-57 with 1:27 left. Hines put back a rebound, Avery drove for a lay-up, and Denzel Johnson popped in a follow as the lead shrunk to 72-63.
 
Avery banked in a runner, and Johnson buried a 3-pointer to pull East within 75-68 with 14 seconds remaining.
 
Eian Hines poured in 12 of his 20 points after halftime to lead the Eagle scoring. Johnson pumped in 14 points, and Avery racked up 13 points. Demetrius Wooten finished with 10 points.
 
McLucas led all scorers with 24 points for Cape Fear. McLaughlin followed with 20 points, and Williams finished with 17 points.
 
Hines drove for a lay-up then converted a Johnson pass into another lay-up. Demarius McArthur put back a rebound, and Johnson drilled a 3-pointer as the Eagles took an early 9-4 lead.
 
Hines spun down the lane for another basket, and Sadrique Ingram bombed in a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 14-9 Eagle lead. East led 14-11 at the quarter break.
 
A pair of Demetrius Wooten lay-ups kept East ahead 18-14, but the Colts rallied to take a 20-18 lead. Johnson answered with another 3-ball, and Demetrius Wooten banked in a runner for a 23-20 East lead.
 
The Colts went back up 26-23, but Hines whirled down the lane for a lay-up, and Aaron Laforte turned a rebound into a 3-point play and a 28-26 Eagle halftime lead.
 
Johnson fired in another 3-pointer from the corner to start the second half and put East up 31-26. McLucas answered with a 3-ball and a corner jumper to tie the game 31-31.
 
Hines canned a fade-away and 2 free throws for a 35-31 lead. Seven straight points bounced the Colts back in front 38-35.
 
Avery knocked down a 3-pointer, Hines drove for a lay-up and Johnson turned an Avery pass into a lay-up and a 42-41 Colt lead.
 
Demetrius Wooten pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds, and Avery and Johnson finished with 5 rebounds each.
 
East Bladen will return to Four County Conference play Friday night at home against Clinton.
