Abbey WaltersWest Bladen grad Abbey Walters belted 4 hits and knocked in 3 runs Sunday as her UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves split a double-header at Chowan University in Murfreesboro losing the first game 8-3, before taking the nightcap 12-2

Walters batted a perfect 3-3 with a double and 2 runs-batted-in in the opener. The 5-6 junior stole a base and scored a run. She also pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, while striking out three.

With 2-out in the UNC-Pembroke first inning, Walters beat out an infield hit and stole second base but was stranded there.

In the Lady Brave third inning, Walters ripped a single to centerfield to drive in Jamie Johnson and trim the Chowan lead to 3-1.

Walters hammered a double down the leftfield line leading off the sixth inning and scored on Toni Nelson’s bunt single.

           

In the first inning of the nightcap, Walters manufactured a 2-out run. The Bladenboro native reached base on an error, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and darted home on a Taylor Gerhart single.

Walters capped a 7-run third inning with a single to centerfield that drove in Jamie Johnson.

The four hits raise Walters’ batting average on the season to .436.

The Lady Braves, now 5-5-1 on the season, will host Wingate Tuesday in a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
