Abbey WaltersPEMBROKE- West Bladen grad Abbey Walters blasted a triple and a game-tying home run in her final 2 at-bats Wednesday to help her UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves complete a double-header sweep of Wingate by scores of 3-2 and 5-4 in nine innings.

With the Lady Knight softball team from her alma mater and a number of other Bladenboro fans in attendance, Walters hammered a 2-out triple to the right field fence that drove in Morgan Davis with the first UNC-P run in the sixth inning.

The Lady Braves tied the game 2-2 in the seventh, but Wingate pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth. UNC-Pembroke answered with one run on a throwing error, before Walters came to the plate with 2 out and walloped a home run over the Marathon sign in right-centerfield to send the game to the ninth inning.

After Wingate had a potential go-ahead run called out on an appeal play for leaving base to soon in the top of the ninth, Taylor Gerhart ripped a one-out single to centerfield to drive in the game-winner for the Lady Braves.

The home run was Walters’ team-high sixth of the season and puts her eighth in the Peach Belt Conference. Her .421 batting average is fourth-best in the league, and her 23 stolen bases are also fourth-best in the league.

UNC-Pembroke won the first game on Whitney Jackson’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Braves, now 22-21-1, will host Peach Belt Conference foe Flagler Friday in a double-header at 1 p.m.
