Staff report

The Lumber River United Way is once again championing the spirit of community service with its highly anticipated annual Day of Caring. This volunteer-driven event, sponsored by Lumberton Chevrolet Buick GMC Hummer & GRAIL, is dedicated to uniting the community to support local nonprofits and human service providers that offer aid to those in need.

Scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, the Day of Caring is a clarion call for volunteers across Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson Counties to participate in a wide array of service projects. Prospective volunteers can visit lumberriveruw.org/day-caring for a detailed list of activities, including those hosted on-site at Lumberton Chevrolet Buick GMC Hummer and at various locations in the community from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

The event will kick off with a free breakfast at 9:00 am, complete with a rally to ignite the day’s efforts, and all volunteers will receive a Day of Caring tee shirt. To ensure the correct tee shirt size, volunteers should register by April 12.

This year’s Day of Caring presents an assortment of volunteer opportunities, such as:

An on-site Knit-In event with NC Cooperative Extension Adopt-A-Highway clean-up with Lumber River United Way

A beautification initiative with Exploration Station Tree planting and cleaning with Robeson County Humane Society

Construction of a residential ramp by Bladen Baptist Association

Beautification projects at Maggie’s Outreach Center and Hoke County Domestic Violence Center

Those interested in contributing their time can sign up for projects, available on a first-registered, first-served basis, at lumberriveruw.org/day-caring.

In addition to volunteer work, individuals and businesses can give back by donating blood or dropping off non-perishable food items at the event’s location from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. For those who may not be able to participate but still wish to contribute, options to support local food pantries are just a click away on the website.

The Lumber River United Way’s Day of Caring is more than just a single day of service; it is a testament to the power of collective action and the shared commitment to making a lasting difference in the community.
