ELIZABETHOWN- East Bladen and West Bladen combined for a 4-1-3 record Saturday night in The Bladen Cup soccer scrimmages against Whiteville and South Columbus.

East Bladen and West Bladen both posted 1 win and 1 tie each in varsity play. East Bladen blanked South Columbus 1-0 and played Whiteville to a 0-0 tie. West Bladen outscored South Columbus 4-1 and tied Whiteville 1-1.

“It makes me feel good to have both Bladen schools playing and showcasing the great talent we have in our county,” said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor. “It was awesome to see the turnout and see the following that soccer has in the county. Huge thanks to our parents and soccer supporters who came out and made it such an amazing event.”

Raynor continued, “Our Varsity moved the ball well and got two solid results. The best part for us was having two shutouts. We are young in lots of places, but we are showing growth. Proud of the guys and ready to get back out there Monday.”

The West Bladen jayvees won both of their games defeating Whiteville 4-1 and shutting out South Columbus 1-0. East Bladen’s jayvees dropped a 1-0 decision to Whiteville on a penalty kick and tied South Columbus 1-1.

“It was our first time with our JV guys (in the Bladen Cup) and they looked great,” stated Raynor. “This year makes 25 years of competitive high school play for our schools. I have been able to have been a part of a majority of that and my Dad in all of it. To see how far soccer has come is amazing.

“Great event that went well,” added Raynor. “All the games were highly competitive.”

East Bladen will entertain North Brunswick Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their season opener. West Bladen will travel to Pender Monday at 6 p.m. to begin their season.
