Bladenboro BoardThe Bladenboro Board heard about the town’s roadway needs on Monday night in an update on Powell Bill funds.

Town Clerk Melanie Hester told the board that Powell Bill funds come to the town from the state and primarily part of the gas tax.

“In the past, the funds have been restricted to paving, resurfacing, patching and sidewalks,” said Hester.

She told the board that the state is wanting to reprioritize the uses and the state wants the number one priority to be placed on resurfacing streets.

Hester said that, currently, the town has $39,000 in Powell Bill funds. She said two streets in the town have been identified as priorities — Harmony Homes Drive which is riddled with pot holes and Railroad Street in the vicinity of First Citizens Bank.

Hester said she was asking the board to consider the state’s request. She said if the board approves the request, than town staff can show on the end of the year report to the state that the streets have been resurfaced.

After further discussion, it was decided that the town staff would get bids for the resurfacing of the two streets and bring them back to the board for consideration.
