LELAND – North Brunswick exploded for 28 points in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 75-60 non-conference boys basketball victory over East Bladen Friday night.

The Scorpions held a slim 47-46 lead after three quarters, but Demond Perry tossed in 2 baskets and 3 free throws in the final period, and teammates Davonte Beatty, Travis Lowe and Sean Devine scored 5 points each during the surge with Beatty and Lowe nailing 3-point shots.

Beatty topped the Scorpion scoring with 31 points, and Lowe and Perry finished with 11 points each.

Guard Greyson Heustess tossed in 2 baskets, senior Keshaun Davis sank 3 free throws, and Bryon Bowen and Javant McDowell hit 2 free throws each as the Eagles edged ahead 11-10 at the first quarter break.

Beatty blistered the nets with 18 points in the second quarter as the Scorpions knotted the score 34-34 at halftime.

McDowell, a sophmore center, dropped in 3 baskets and 3 free throws in the second period for East Bladen, and sophmore Freddy Wooten threw in a 3-point shot, another basket and 2 free throws in the quarter. Senior Pierce Melvin sank 4 free throws in the period.

Melvin and senior Darrell Banks buried 3-point shots in the third quarter, and Davis, Bowen and Wooten added baskets to keep East within 47-46. Melvin and Heustess bombed in 3-point shots in the final quarter, and McDowell made 4 straight free throws.

McDowell led the Eagle scoring with 15 points. Melvin and Wooten finished with 10 points each, and Heustess and Davis added 7 points each.

It was the season opener for the Eagles who will host Whiteville Tuesday night in their Three Rivers Conference opener.
