FAYETTEVILLE – A 70-year-old bridge with timber components on N.C. 242 has reached its lifespan and will be replaced, the N.C. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The bridge spanning Beaver Dam Creek will require a section of the road to close when construction begins, sometime between July and September.

NCDOT awarded the $2.2 million contract this month to S&S Construction LLC of Wilmington.

The bridge, which is located in the Beaver Dam community southeast of Fayetteville on Elizabethtown Highway, is deemed structurally deficient. This designation means that while remaining safe, the bridge has aging structures that require more maintenance. The new bridge will have concrete girders and be about 35 feet longer than the present one.

During construction, a 2.5-mile detour will send drivers onto Broadwater Bridge Road, Manly Smith Road, which crosses the same creek, and N.C. 210.
