A staff reportIn North Carolina, WARM NC (Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry) is a light of hope for families facing housing challenges. With a mission to provide essential repairs such as fixing leaky roofs, repairing broken plumbing, and addressing accessibility issues, WARM NC goes beyond mere construction – they rebuild homes and lives.
For many individuals and families, a leaky roof or a malfunctioning plumbing system isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a barrier to safety, health, and dignity. That’s where WARM NC steps in, offering vital assistance to those in need. By providing these basic needs, the organization not only improves living conditions but also restores hope and dignity to those they serve.
One mission project of WARM NC was recently shared. Growing up in Wilmington, Steve’s connection to his childhood home deepened when he inherited his mother’s mobile home after her passing in 1983. Since then, he has called it his own, finding solace and familiarity within its walls. Now, at 62, Steve grapples with health issues that limit his ability to work full-time. Despite working part-time at Cracker Barrel to make ends meet, the weight of medical bills, groceries, utilities, and gas expenses leaves him with little to spare for the maintenance of his aging mobile home. The wear and tear of time have taken their toll on Steve’s residence. The floors in the bedrooms and bathroom show signs of decay, with some areas even caving in. A recent storm inflicted further damage, leading to a leak in the roof that triggered electrical issues. As a result, Steve finds himself navigating his home in partial darkness, with non-functional lights and outlets in crucial areas such as the back bedroom, bathroom, and hallway. Lacking a proper HVAC system, Steve relies on a single window unit for cooling during the sweltering summer months and a lone space heater to ward off the winter chill.
Feeling the weight of his circumstances, Steve’s friend stepped in and introduced him to WARM NC. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donors, Steve’s home is undergoing the necessary repairs to restore its safety and integrity.Expressing his gratitude, Steve acknowledges the collective effort that has breathed new life into his home. “I appreciate every one of the supporters that have a hand in this. I couldn’t do it myself,” he remarks, reflecting on the compassion and assistance that have offered him a lifeline in his time of need. But WARM NC cannot do it alone. Monthly donors form the backbone of their operation, allowing them to plan and execute home repair projects efficiently and effectively.
