Bladen County Commissioners with Bladen County SchoolsElizabethtown, NC – At their June 1 board meeting, the Bladen County Commissioners took action on an agenda item from the Bladen County Schools. In a 6-3 vote, Commissioners approved an additional budget appropriation to the school system for $350,000 to be paid out of the county general fund account.

The request was made by the Board of Education to cover remaining expenses of the 2014-2015 school year. The original request asked for a transfer of funds from the schools capital outlay fund to the schools current expense fund. That request failed to receive approval citing NC GS 115C-443.  Superintendent Robert Taylor stated that the school system would continue to reduce expenses where possible through the end of the fiscal year in hopes of balancing the budget by June 30, 2015. Possible reductions to expenses could include reducing or eliminating professional development, delaying maintenance and repairs, and general meeting costs.

The County Commissioners last week notified the Board of Education of an approved budget appropriation by the Commissioners for the 2015-2016 school year of $6.6 million plus $170,000 in fines and forfeitures.
