Less than two weeks ago the Riegelwood All-Stars were rolling through the North Carolina Dixie Youth Baseball Division II Major League state tournament played at Elizabethtown’s Leinwand Park.

This morning, the team is scheduled to play for the World Series championship in Laurel, Mississippi. Riegelwood is matched against Taylorsville, Mississippi in the title game. Riegelwood beat Taylorsville 2-1 earlier in the tournament.

Today’s championship game is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET. If Riegelwood loses, the teams will play again at 4 p.m. ET.

Riegelwood beat Burgaw 13-6 on Tuesday night in the World Series semifinals. Burgaw earned its spot in the tournament with a 2-0 win against South Columbus on July 23 at Leinwand Park.

It was obvious in the state tournament that Riegelwood was the best team. In six games, it outscored the opposition 76-4. Riegelwood beat Burgaw 12-4 and 16-0, South Columbus 10-0 and 11-0, Lockwood Folly 15-0 and Rose Hill 12-0.

In the World Series, Riegelwood has won by scores of 21-2, 2-1, 5-4 and 13-6.

Burgaw and Riegelwood have represented North Carolina well. Hopefully, Riegelwood can bring home the World Series championship.

• In the Dixie Youth Baseball Division II AA (Coach-Pitch) World Series, Leland won once in three games. The squad opened with an 8-7 win against the Florida runner-up before losing to Florida 9-3 and Alabama 14-6.

Leland earned its berth in the tournament by winning the state tournament played in Clarkton.

• West Robeson, which won the state Division I Majors tournament at Leinwand Park on July 24, opens World Series play Saturday against the Texas state champion.

Summer baseball is winding down.

High school sports is cranking up. Fall sports teams open their seasons in un-fall like heat in about two weeks. Practices are underway. Hopefully, COVID-19 doesn’t impact the seasons like last year.
