OCEAN ISLE BEACH – Claxton Tatum and Noah German combined to pitch a 1-hitter and strikeout 9 batters, and Bladen County banged out 10 hits en route to a 14-1 opening round victory over Burgaw in the Dixie Boys Baseball State Tournament.
Bladen County advances to play Columbus County Sunday at 2 p.m. Columbus County defeated Duplin County 15-0 Saturday.
Tatum started on the mound and struck out 6 and walked 1 in his 2 scoreless innings of work. German struck out 3, walked 1 and allowed an unearned run on a hit and an error in his 2 innings of relief.
Luke Bryant and Tatum reached base on errors to start the game. McArthur belted a single, and Cole Brisson reached base on an error. Bryant and Tatum scored, and Jaxon Hair launched a sacrifice fly to center field that scored McArthur and put Bladen up 3-0.
Devan Stanley smacked a single to right and stole 2nd base to start the Bladen 2nd inning. Fox Sutton reached base on an error and advanced on a wild pitch as Stanley scored. Omar Stanley ripped a single but was retired on Bryant’s fielder’s choice. Tatum and Brisson sandwiched singles around a walk to McArthur. Sutton and Bryant scored as the lead grew to 6-0.
Bladen scored 8 2-out runs in the 3rd inning. Powell and Tatum drew walks, and Bryant, McArthur and Brisson raked singles. Hair reached on an error, and Jamari Peterson blasted a triple. Stanley and Powell drew walks, and C. J. McCracken reached on an error. Powell, Bryant, Tatum, McArthur, Brisson, Hair, Peterson and Stanley all scored as the lead swelled to 14-0.
McArthur batted a perfect 2-for-2 and scored twice to lead the Bladen hitters. Brisson finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Peterson drilled the RBI triple and scored a run. Bryant, Tatum, Stanley and Powell added 1 hit each. Bryant scored 3 runs. Tatum and Stanley scored 2 runs each. Hair, Sutton and Powell scored runs, and Hair had an RBI.
