CLARKTON – Damion Maynor and Daveon Whittington combined to pitch a 3-hitter and strike out 10 batters Saturday and led Elizabethtown to an 8-3 victory over Columbus County in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Supplemental Tournament.

Elizabethtown advances to play Whiteville Sunday at 4 p.m. Whiteville defeated Bladen County 4-1 Saturday.

Maynor started and pitched 3.2 innings allowing only 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9 batters. Whittington relieved in the 4th inning and worked 0.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 walks and a hit while striking out one.

After Columbus scored a 1st inning run, Elizabethtown answered with 2 runs in the home 1st. Khalil Moore slapped a single past shortstop, and Whittington drilled a single to center field. Moore and Whittington both scored for a 2-1 Elizabethtown lead.

Tyler McFadden laced a single to left-center field, and Cooper Sasser raked a single to left. An error on Jordan Babson’s grounder scored McFadden to pad the lead to 3-1.

Elizabethtown pulled away with 5 runs in the 3rd inning. J. J. High, Jr. walked, and Whittington pounded a double to left-center field. Hayes Clifton laced a single to right-center field, Lyrik Lawson belted a single to left-center field, and McFadden and Grayson Leggett drew walks. High, Whittington, Clifton, Lawson and McFadden all scored.

Whittington batted 2-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored to lead the winners at the plate. Moore, Clifton, Lawson, McFadden and Sasser connected for 1 hit each. McFadden scored twice, and Moore, High, Clifton and Lawson also scored runs.
