ELIZABETHTOWN – Junior Maegan Burney and senior Alexus Mitchell teamed up for 28 points and sparked East Bladen to a 51-19 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over Gray’s Creek Tuesday night.
Burney topped all scorers with 16 points and collected 3 assists. Mitchell checked all the stat columns with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Junior AnnaGrey Heustess finished with 5 points and 3 assists.

Freshman Iveonna Ward totaled 5 points, 8 steals and 3 rebounds. Senior Maya McDonald grabbed 10 rebounds and added 4 assists and 4 steals. Freshman Laila Smith pulled down 5 rebounds and scored 4 points.
Mitchell threw in a pair of baskets in the opening period. Heustess sank 2 free throws and a basket, and Burney dropped in a basket and a free throw as the Lady Eagles raced to a 14-2 lead.
Junior Karli Priest nailed a 3-point shot to begin the 2nd quarter for East. Ward flipped in a basket, before Mitchell turned a feed from Burney into a lay-up, drained a 3-point shot then put back a rebound bucket for a 26-7 halftime lead.
Burney lit up the scoreboard after halftime with a trio of lay-ups set up by 2 assists from McDonald and 1 from Ward. Burney also popped in a corner jumper, and McDonald drove for a lay-up and a 38-15 lead at the quarter break.
Two more McDonald assists produced 2 more Burney lay-ups in the final quarter. Assists from Priest and Mitchell led to lay-ups for Laila Smith, and junior Brianna Phillips bombed in a 3-point shot to close out the scoring.
“We turned the ball over too much,” said Lady Eagle Coach Patty Evers. “We played so hard and with such a sense of urgency that we went too fast. We didn’t shoot the ball well. We just need to get in the gym and work on those things.”
The Lady Eagles, now 3-0, will travel to Wallace-Rose Hill Wednesday for a 5:30 game.
