BURGAW – Sophmore Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson and freshman Patience Ward combined for 39 points to lead East Bladen’s Lady Eagles to a 61-30 Four County Conference girls basketball victory over Pender Tuesday night.
Moore-Peterson led all scorers with 23 points, and Ward finished with 16 points. Junior Shardajah Brown followed with 8 points for the winners.
Moore-Peterson drained a 3-point shot and threw in 2 more baskets and 2 free throws as the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 17-8 first quarter lead. Brown bombed in a pair of 3-point baskets for East Bladen in the period.
The Lady Eagles blew the game open with a 17-1 second quarter blitz that stretched the halftime lead to 34-9. Ward drove to the hoop for 4 baskets in the period, and Moore-Peterson buried another 3-point shot and connected on 2 other baskets.
Moore-Peterson sank a trio of free throws and a basket in the third quarter. Senior Yolanda Coston added a basket, and Ward netted 2 free throws to keep the lead at East Bladen lead 44-23.
Freshman Lorna Mendell worked inside for 2 baskets and a free throw, and Ward canned a basket and 2 more free throws in the final quarter.
“We played great defense,” said East Bladen Coach Patty Evers. “Everybody played a good amount of time and that is helping out the team as a whole!”
The Lady Eagles improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Four County Conference. East Bladen will host Heide Trask Wednesday night.
