BLADENBORO – Sophomores Megan Pait and Mallory Bryan sparked a 10-0 1st period run that propelled West Bladen to a 35-18 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over West Columbus Friday night.

Bryan drove for a lay-up to start the game, then Pait hooked in a lay-up in transition. Bryan stole the ball and raced for a lay-up, before Pait turned a feed from junior Lainey Autry into a lay-up and a 3-point play. Autry tossed in a free throw for the 10-0 lead.

Sophomore Brookee Singletary sank 2 free throws, and Autry and senior Anasia Baxley added 1 foul shot each to keep the Lady Knights up 14-6 at halftime.

Pait began the 2nd half with a lay-up, freshman Holland Davis muscled in a rebound basket, Singletary canned a free throw, and freshman Kiera Lewis converted a pass from Davis into a lay-up, then drove for a 3-point play. Davis put back another rebound, and Autry stole the ball and sprinted for a lay-up and a 28-9 lead.

Pait nailed a 3-point shot to open the final period. Singletary banked in a turn-around, and Bryan banked in a runner.

The Lady Knights are playing without 6 players this week due to contact tracing. “I was proud of our girls fortitude,” said Coach Brian McCleney. “They didn’t feel sorry for themselves. This gave them a chance to bond together”

Pait led the Lady Knights with 10 points. Bryan followed with 6 points, and Singletary and Lewis netted 5 points each.

“Those 3 games this week with only 8 players kind of showed,” noted McCleney. “We were a little winded and tired at times. The zone helped us out by giving us a breather.”

The Lady Knights, now 3-1, will travel to Whiteville Monday night.
