PEMBROKE– Tyler Lewis pitched a 3-hit shutout and struck out 5 batters as West Bladen claimed the deciding game in their best-of-3 Junior American Legion playoff series Sunday night with a 10-0 mercy rule victory over Purnell Swett.
West Bladen wins the series 2 games to 1 and advances to play West Columbus. The schedule for that series will be announced Monday. The Knights evened their overall record for the season at 5-5.
Aiden Russ turned in a perfect 3-for-3 performance with 2 RBIs to lead the Knight hitters. Cade Allen and Jordan Hester both batted 2-for-3. Allen scored 4 runs, and Hester walloped a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.
Brady Durden, Josh Dawson, Ashton Davis and Lewis connected for 1 hit each and scored 1 run each. Weston Hilburn scored a run and drove in 2 runs. Jackson Smith, Lewis and Dawson had RBIs.
Lewis pitched out of a bases-loaded, 1-out jam in the 1st inning with a strikeout and a ground-out. A shortstop Durden to second baseman Aiden Russ to first baseman Hester double play highlighted the 4th inning defense.
Durden led off the game with a single, and Allen walked. Durden stole 3rd base and scored on Hester’s infield out. Hilburn’s infield out plated Allen, and Davis belted a single. Lewis walked, and Dawson laced a single that scored Davis for a 3-0 West lead.
Aiden Russ cracked a lead-off single in the West 2nd inning but was retired on Allen’s fielder’s choice. Hester ripped a single, and Allen scored as Hilburn reached base on an error to pad the lead to 4-0.
Dawson reached base on an error in the 3rd inning, and Aiden Russ knocked him in with a single that upped the count to 5-0.
Allen smashed a single to start the Knight 4th inning. Hester walked, and Hilburn reached base on an error that scored Allen. Smith’s ground-out plated Hester, and Lewis swatted a single that scored Hilburn. After Allister Russ walked, Aiden Russ delivered his 3rd hit of the night that scored Lewis and stretched the lead to 9-0.
Allen swatted a single to begin the 5th inning, and Hester pounded a double that scored Allen and pushed the lead to 10-0.
Mason Brewer batted 2-for-4 to lead Swett at the plate.
