ELIZABETHTOWN — The East Bladen junior varsity team withstood a furious rally by Fairmont in the final three minutes to beat the Golden Tornadoes 40-38 on Friday in a Southeastern Athletic Conference basketball game.

The Eagles led 39-28 with 3:17 remaining following a lay-up from Tevin McLean. Fairmont reeled off 10 straight points to cut it to 39-38 with 7 seconds remaining. Shannon Hawkins made 1 of 3 free throws for East Bladen following a personal foul and technical foul against Fairmont.

Leading by two with only 4.6 seconds remaining, East Bladen turned the ball over and Fairmont’s C. Johnson was fouled with two seconds remaining. Both free throws were missed, the second intentionally, but Fairmont couldn’t score on the rebound.

East Bladen bolted to an 11-1 lead in the first 4½ minutes before Fairmont cut it to 11-10 by the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles opened a 25-16 halftime lead and led 30-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Malikah Moore led East Bladen with 14 points and Chace Butler added nine.

East Bladen is 9-3 overall and 3-1 in SAC-7 play. The Eagles are scheduled to play at Red Springs on Tuesday.
