On March 2, 2024, the spotlight fell on young orators as the 9th Annual Leola Wade Oratorical Contest unfolded in Atlanta, GA. Hosted by Khandi Cooper in collaboration with Carolina Adventist Academy, this esteemed event showcases the eloquence and historical knowledge of students through the recitation of impactful speeches.

Carolina Adventist Academy proudly sent two exceptional representatives to the contest, both hailing from Bladen County. Raheem Graham and Atheena Swindell captivated the audience with their impassioned performances, earning well-deserved recognition for their remarkable oratory skills.

Raheem Graham, a resident of Bladen County, clinched the third-place position with his stirring rendition of Daniel A. Payne’s powerful speech, “Slavery Brutalizes Man.” His delivery resonated with depth and conviction, leaving a lasting impression on all who listened.

Atheena Swindell, another Bladen County native, claimed the coveted first-place title with her original composition, enriched with poignant quotes from literary luminaries Langston Hughes and Sojourner Truth. Her speech not only showcased her eloquence but also highlighted her creative prowess and deep understanding of historical themes.

The success of these two students from Carolina Adventist Academy underscores the rich talent and academic excellence present within Bladen County’s youth.
