MckoyAn Elizabethtown teenager rejected a plea offer by the state Tuesday and will stand trial on an attempted murder charge.

Marquail Dashawn McKoy, 17, rejected a plea offer of discharging a weapon into occupied property that would carry a sentence between 51 and 74 months.

Instead, McKoy told Judge Douglas B. Sasser that he wanted a trial on felony charges of attempted first degree murder and discharging a weapon into occupied property. Sasser told McKoy that, if convicted, he could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison. McKoy said he understood.

McKoy’s trial is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 11 in Bladen County Superior Court. He has been in custody since March 4.

The incident began when Elizabethtown police officers were called to the 400 block of Kemp Street in response to shots being fired about 4:55 p.m. on March 4. Investigators say that McKoy and another person had argued inside a residence. McKoy then left the residence and the second person followed a short time later.

McKoy shot at the man as he came out of the residence before fleeing the scene, according to the investigation. No one was struck by the shot, but officers found a bullet hole in the man’s shirt, and the bullet went inside the residence.

McKoy was arrested about four hours later.
