DUBLIN – Junior Funez blistered the nets with a “Double Hat Trick” plus one of 7 goals Thursday night as he led West Bladen’s Knights to a 10-7 Four County Conference men’s soccer victory over Union.
Funez, a sophmore, lit up the scoreboard with 3 goals in the first half as the Knights raced to a 4-0 halftime lead. Senior Caleb Johnson banged in a header off of a corner kick for the other West Bladen goal in the first half.
The visiting Spartans sliced the Knight lead to 4-2 midway the second half until Funez ignited a 6-1 scoring blitz that stretched the West Bladen lead to 10-3 with 11:43 left to play.
Funez sprinted into the box and beat the Union goalie with a crossing shot that padded the lead to 5-2 with 22:14 remaining.
Moments later Funez blasted in a shot from 20 yards out on the left. Funez then cut across the box and flipped a shot past the keeper with his left foot that upped the count to 7-2.
The Spartans answered with a goal at the 13:06 mark to trim the margin to 7-3, but sophmore Pablo Ortega looped a shot over the goalie’s head from 20 yards out that pushed the Knight lead to 8-3 with 12:53 on the clock.
Forty-nine seconds later Funez tallied his seventh goal of the game as he nailed a shot from the left corner of the 18 yardline that widened the gap to 9-3.
Eighteen seconds later, the Knights struck again as senior Jorchael Gonzales-Monroy lobbed a shot over the keeper’s head and into the net from 15 yards out for a 10-3 West Bladen lead with 11:43 left to play.
The Spartans responded with a goal at the 11:29 mark then tacked on 3 more goals in the final 7 minutes as the Knight reserves saw some minutes on the pitch.
Coach Brennan Brown’s Knights posted their second league win and evened their overall record at 7-7-1. West Bladen will host Midway Monday at 6 p.m.
